Comments from our volunteers

I became a volunteer because I have had first hand experience of domestic violence and I didn't want somebody else to go through it on their own. I get the satisfaction of knowing that somebody else doesn't have to go it alone! there's help here if and when they need it. Sometimes all they want is to have somebody listen to the~ other times want to be given information about where they can go for further help i.e. police, solicitors, Benefit Agency. When I first became volunteer the service was only a telephone helpline. Now it is more group work with some telephone work. It's changed over the past six years for the better I think. Being a volunteer can leave me feeling frustrated, exhilarated, numb, tired with a BIG headache but it can also make m~ feel useful. Knowing I have made somebody feel better is the best feeling ever even if all I have done is let them talk. Sometimes having someone to listen is all they want.

I am on a New Deal placement in the voluntary sector. since I have been here I have learned new skills e.g. computer, photocopying and listening. I have helped people to update their CV's and gained their trust and confidence. In gaining people's trust and confidence it has made me feel that I have made a positive achievement both in my own life and those of service users.

I like helping people so I thought I should do it properly. I wanted to learn new listening skills and I wanted to commit a regular amount of time to volunteering. Being involved with The Support Centre is helping me to overcome my own past negative experiences. I also get job satisfaction from my work here. Taking a service user to hospital I felt verity nervous but afterwards pleased with myself because I have a fear of hospitals. I am hoping to gain experience over the next months to become a more skillful listener. Jane

I volunteered because I had spare time. Since being here I have been on a Counseling course and learned a little about myself and a little about listening
